Zagreb was two rival medieval towns, Gradec on one hill and Kaptol on the other, and they threw stones at each other across the creek between them for a couple of centuries. The creek was covered over and became Tkalčićeva, which is now the drinking street. This road starts above it in the Upper Town and works down and west, away from the parasols.

Pod Starim Krovovima
Under the Old Roofs, open since 1830 and the oldest pub in the city, tucked on Basaričekova behind St Mark's with its tiled roof. Šenoa drank here, and Matoš, and Krklec, and Tin Ujević, which is most of the Croatian literature syllabus in one small room. Every Saturday morning since 1964, without a single break, it has held a poetry reading, which its regulars will tell you is the longest running poets' stand anywhere. Start with a gemišt, which is white wine and sparkling water, and do not be in a hurry.

Krolo
Downhill on Radićeva, a narrow wooden bar named after Mirko Krolo, who owns it, because that is how these places used to be named. It is small, it is cheap, and it has outlasted every wave of redecoration that has washed up and down this street. What it mostly offers is the texture of Zagreb before 1991: dark wood, no concept, conversations that started decades ago and were never formally closed. Stand at the bar rather than sit.

Stari Fijaker
The Old Carriage, on Mesnička, and this is where you eat properly before the evening gets away from you. The cooking is Zagorje, the hill country north of the city: štrukli, which is fresh cheese folded into pastry and baked or boiled and is the single dish Zagreb would defend with violence, and purica s mlincima, turkey with flat baked noodles softened in the roasting juices. Order the štrukli even if you have ordered everything else. This is the anchor because everything after it is liquid.

West to Kačićeva and a room you would walk past, because it does not announce itself and does not intend to. Inside it is beer and art in more or less equal measure, every wall layered with exhibition posters and concert bills going back years, and a crowd that is students, painters, people who have just come from something and people about to go on to something. Nothing here is designed. It has simply accumulated.

Melin
Back east into Kožarska, the alley that runs behind Tkalčićeva, to a bar that opened in 1987 and has changed owners and styling several times without ever once losing its nerve. Roughly fifty flattened trumpets are fixed along the sides of the bar, old television sets do duty as liquor cabinets and tables, and no two chairs on the patio match. It is jazz rather than rock, quiet during the day and live at weekends across every generation in the room. Last one here, then ten minutes downhill to bed.

🎁 What we left off, and why. Tolkien's House is eighty-nine metres from Melin on Opatovina, fitted out entirely in Middle Earth with swords and runes, and it has been completely sincere about it for decades, which counts for something. It is still a themed room, and this road already puts you in a tavern from 1830 that has read poetry every Saturday since 1964, so the invented past would be competing with a real one it cannot beat.
