The Low Road: The Strait Street Court Martial

Strait Street is a knife cut through Valletta, one carriage wide, and for a century and a half it was the Gut: the Royal Navy's own street of music bars, dance halls and trouble, with the shore patrol at each end. The fleet left in 1979 and the street died with it and stayed dead for thirty years. This road walks it from the bottom to the top, then goes over one block and down to the harbour. Valletta is eight hundred metres long, so all of it is on foot.

1. 1 · The Cold Open
   Trabuxu
   Start at the quiet end, underground. This is a stone vaulted cellar about four hundred years old, cut into the rock when the Knights were still building the city above it, and you go down steps off Strait Street to reach it. Wine by the glass, Maltese cheese and sausage on a board, and in winter it is one of the warmest rooms on the island because it is inside the rock rather than on it. It was among the first places to open on this street when nobody believed the street would come back.

2. 2 · The Detour
   Yard 32
   Further up the same street, at number 32, and gin is the whole argument: a wall of them, heavy on the Mediterranean botanicals, poured by people who will happily talk you through why juniper behaves differently in this climate. Ftira boards, which is the Maltese sourdough ring, come out to keep proceedings orderly. On a warm night the tables go out into the street itself, which is narrow enough that both sides can hear each other, and usually do.

3. 3 · The Anchor
   Tico Tico
   At the top of the street, and this is the reason for the whole road. The original Tico Tico was one of the Gut's music bars, the kind of room where a Maltese band played for sailors off ships whose names were painted on the wall, and it went dark with everything else after 1979. It reopened in 2012 under the same name, small and low and deliberately unrestored, and it is the closest thing left to what this street actually was. This is the anchor: five bars in Valletta and only one of them is the street coming back to life rather than a new bar on an old address.

4. 4 · The Wildcard
   The Pub
   One block east on Archbishop Street, and it is very small: a single room you could cross in four paces. On 2 May 1999 Oliver Reed spent an afternoon in here during a break from filming Gladiator, drank a great deal, reportedly arm-wrestled sailors, and had a heart attack. He died the same day. The walls carry his photographs from across his whole career and the room handles it without ghoulishness, which is harder than it sounds. Have one, look at the pictures, and do not attempt the arm-wrestling.

5. 5 · The Last Call
   Bridge Bar
   Down the hill to the little bridge on Liesse Hill, where the city drops away toward the Grand Harbour. Most nights it is an ordinary bar and on Friday nights it is the best thing in Valletta: a band sets up on the bridge itself, and the entire flight of stone steps becomes seating, with cushions handed out and wine in plastic cups and the harbour lights below. Sit on the steps rather than inside. The acoustics were designed by the Knights of St John for other purposes entirely and they work beautifully.
