Seattle's proof of trading lives in a state workbook nearly ten thousand rows long, and four of these five rooms are in it as active. The fifth visibly trades with no row at all, which is the kind of contradiction this guide reports instead of smoothing. The oldest saloon claim on the first stop did not survive the directories, and the truth underneath is a better room anyway.

1. 1 · The Cold Open
   Central Saloon
   The Skagit Building went up in 1889 in the first brick wave after the Great Fire, and the room has poured for miners, longshoremen and sailors ever since. The house says 1892; the directories show a saloon called the Seattle here by 1898, The Central since 1919, and the Central Saloon name only since 1990. Vito Carnovale ran it for three decades from 1937 and treated Skid Road to a free Christmas dinner every year. Soundgarden worked this tiny stage before Sub Pop pressed their first single, and Nirvana played it three times in 1988, before the world learned the word grunge. Sub Pop's own founders insist the band's first Seattle show happened here, not at the Vogue. Take a drink by the tiny stage, under the neon, and read the walls. Brick, neon and no apologies.

2. 2 · The Detour
   The 5 Point Cafe
   Belltown's confessional since 1929, half diner and half bar, cheating tourists and drunks since before your grandfather could order, as the house slogan runs. The pandemic broke the all night habit for a spell, but the griddle and the taps are back to round the clock, every day of the week. A boilermaker with breakfast raises no eyebrows here, and the chicken fried steak is the biggest in Seattle by the house's own boast. C. Preston Smith opened the room in the year of the crash and his son kept it until 1975. The bar side is twenty one and over; the cafe takes all comers at any hour. Beside the Chief Seattle statue on Tilikum Place, it claims to be the oldest bar still pouring in Belltown.

3. 3 · The Wildcard
   Shorty's
   Coney dogs, pinball and clown paint on red vinyl, in a Belltown room that has taken quarters since 1997. When the wreckers came for its first corner in 2019 it moved two blocks up 2nd Avenue and reopened inside a week, machines and all. The front bar keeps the arcade games, the back room is the pinball hall proper, and the Trophy Room upstairs hides vintage coin op bowling machines with a change machine to keep the silver flowing. Order a coney dog and quarters for the pinball; the bar takes its time and nobody minds. Hamm's and a well shot is the house happy hour, late on Wednesdays and Thursdays. It calls itself Seattle's original pinball arcade bar, and nobody in the city argues.

4. 4 · The Cross-Examination
   Comet Tavern
   Capitol Hill's shaggy old tavern, beer signs and initials carved deep in a 1910 corner building that has housed a taproom for more than a century. The Comet name has hung here since at least the 1950s, and the room has been declared finished more than once, most recently in 2013 before the crowd behind the Capitol Hill Block Party resurrected it in 2014. Legend tells of prohibition tunnels in the basement of the Bluff Building, and the legend suits the room better than any fact could. A beer under the signs, among the carved initials, is still the whole assignment, with resident DJs at the weekend and the Kraken on the screens. The neighbourhood argues in here and makes up on the sidewalk.

5. 5 · The Last Call
   Linda's Tavern
   Opened in February 1994 by Linda Derschang with the founders of Sub Pop, Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman, who wanted somewhere cheap to drink with a vinyl jukebox. An elk head hangs over the bar, the happy hour runs four to six every day, and the back patio outlasts the rain. It was the last place Kurt Cobain was seen in public, a fact the room carries quietly. The true order is whiskey and a tallboy, out on the back patio, though brunch runs at the weekend and the kitchen holds until midnight. The neighbourhood toasted the room's thirtieth birthday in February 2024, and nothing important had changed. The night ends a short walk east on Broadway.
