Rio protects its bars the right way round. The city keeps a register that lists the BUSINESS rather than the building, runs ten years, and is cancelled if the trade stops, so an entry in it is evidence somebody is still pouring. Four of these five are in it. The fifth is in nothing at all and is the better for knowing it. Zona Sul, chopp by chopp, and the sunset in the middle is not optional. This is also the shore end of an industry. Petrobras runs the country from a twenty-nine storey slab on Avenida Republica do Chile, its research centre fills a hundred and fifteen laboratories on Ilha do Fundao, and the boats lie across the water at Niteroi. Out west at Jacarepagua, offshore flying made this the busiest heliport on earth in 2025, north of eighty thousand movements. The men who work the pre-salt keep their lives in this city.
Art deco on the lagoon, opened in 1934 as the Bar Berlim and renamed once Brazil went to war with Germany. The city listed the building itself by decree in 1993, so the doors, the floor and the lamps are protected by law rather than by sentiment, and it went onto a second register in 2011, the one that protects the trade and lapses if the trade stops. The waiters still wear bow ties, the tablecloths are still white and the menu has barely moved in decades. Drink the chopp, which arrives colder than seems legal, and eat the kassler, a smoked pork chop that comes with the potato salad the house is known for. Begin unhurried. Rio will set the pace regardless.
Opened in 1939 by German and Swiss owners and bought by the Portuguese Gomes family in 1972, whose grandchildren hold it now. The door is on Candido Gaffree and that is the whole trick of the place: you queue at the outside counter, pay there, then carry it across the road to the low seawall half the city sits on at sunset. Ask for a shrimp empada and a chopp Brahma, and add a cod fritter if the queue was long. The city declared the business itself cultural heritage in December 2012, which protects the trade and not merely the walls, though the ten year term has now run and we could find no decree renewing it. Nobody minds how long you stay out on that wall, because the wall is free and is separately listed in its own right. Sunset is non negotiable.

3 · The Anchor Galeto Sat's
Charcoal galeto since 1962, opened by two Spaniards named Garcia and Rivera, still trading at the Copacabana end of Barata Ribeiro behind green tiles and a granite floor. The city entered it on the register of traditional and notable businesses on 7 July 2022, in the week Copacabana turned a hundred and thirty. Order the galeto completo, which arrives with rice, farofa, chips and molho a campanha, and put a plate of pao de alho down beside it. Drink the chopp with that, then look up at the cachaca shelf, because the house keeps a long list of them. The grill runs past four in the morning, which tells you exactly what this room is for. One thing we used to print and have now pulled: there is no evidence in any language that Tom Jobim ate here.

4 · The Wildcard Academia da Cachaça
Three partners opened this on 25 October 1985 to give cachaca the respect nobody was giving it, after a year of driving round Brazil tasting. The Leblon list runs to more than eighty labels, not the several hundred everyone repeats, and there is a specialist behind the counter who will steer you if you ask. Order a caipirinha, built here with real fruit and a chosen cachaca rather than whatever bottle is open, and eat the escondidinho, the baked dish of meat under pureed cassava that the house invented in 1986 and has outsold everything with since. The feijoada is on every day at any hour and has the prizes to justify it, and there is chorinho on Thursday evenings. This is the only room on the road the city has not listed, so it stands on its shelf rather than on paperwork.

The Veloso was an ordinary corner bar on Rua Montenegro until the winter of 1962, when Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes sat here and watched a seventeen year old walk past on her way to the sea. The song was not written at this table, whatever you have been told: Jobim found the tune at his piano on Rua Barao da Torre and Moraes wrote the words up in Petropolis. What happened here was the looking, and that was enough to rename first the bar and then the street. On 1 July 2026 the city declared the bar itself intangible cultural heritage and ordered it written into the register of places, while leaving the building at this number entirely unprotected. Yes it trades on all of it, and it has earned the right. Take the corner table, order one last chopp, and let Ipanema's hotels close in around you.
🎁 For the trade, a detour that is not a bar. The offshore fleet does not tie up downtown: it lies a mile across the water at Ilha da Conceicao and Ponta d'Areia in Niteroi, one square kilometre holding Subsea 7 do Brasil's headquarters, OceanPact, Camorim, CBO's own yard and the Wilson Sons base, with DOF's Skandi boats and the six jewel-named pipelayers now flying the Seagems name after Sapura's parent became Vantris in August 2025. OceanPact and CBO announced in March 2026 that they are merging into a seventy-three vessel Brazilian fleet. Every one of those quays is behind a fence, so the honest way to see it is the ferry from Praca XV to Arariboia, twenty minutes for a few reais, out past the anchorage and in close along the Niteroi waterfront with the docks of the Estaleiro Maua to port. That yard stands where the Baron of Maua put his foundry in 1846 and started Brazilian shipbuilding. Whether a particular boat is alongside on the day you cross is luck.
