Latvia publishes its company register, its tax standings and its address register as open data, so every operator on this road was checked against the state this week, down to one bar's tax debt. The balsam that names the road turns out to rest on a thinner paper trail than its label admits, and the famous Soviet cafe is a revival that moved house. The truth, as always on these roads, is the better story.

Black Magic Bar
An apothecary theatre for Riga Black Balsam, run since 2007 in an Old Town house dressed as the 1752 legend. The official story says apothecary Abraham Kunze first bottled his cure all that year; the paper trail is thinner, a privilege to merchant Semjons Ļeļuhins in 1789, the name Rīgas balzams from 1790, and a recipe rebuilt from memory in 1950 after the war lost it. The room plays it straight anyway: waistcoated staff, herb drawers, a hidden back room behind the bookcase. Order a balsam coffee and the balsam truffles, the kindest introductions to a forty five percent spirit. The pour comes in ceramic and the truffles from their own kitchen. Bufete Gauja
A Soviet seventies living room run as a working bufete: mint walls, period lighting, vintage magazines and board games that see use. The name honours a Soviet era cafe on Tērbatas iela; this revival opened there in 2015, then settled into a wooden house at Stabu 32, where it has poured since at least 2018, with a chestnut tree courtyard stage for summer concerts. The furnishings are real period pieces and the business is ten years old, which the room is honest about if you ask. Nothing is behind glass and nobody hurries you. Order cheap Latvian beer and, if hungry, the sivēna karbonāde, a pork chop bigger than its plate. Students and the art crowd hold the tables and the prices stay honest. A brief detour into the previous century, a few blocks north of where it began.

Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs
A vaulted cellar under Old Town where Latvian folk gets loud: live bands five nights a week, folk dancing on Wednesdays, and the country's largest all Latvian tap wall, around thirty beers and ciders. The club has run the cave since the early 2010s and the room still fills by eleven. Order grey peas with bacon, the national dish of stubbornness, and a braised pork knuckle to anchor the beer. Both sit on the menu today, pelēkie zirņi and cūkas stilbs, in the house's own words. Thursday through Saturday it runs into the small hours, five in the morning at the weekend. Fifteen years on, this is still where Riga teaches visitors to stamp in time. The writ's main clause.

Labietis
Craft brewing by way of Baltic paganism, in the old von Stricka brewery quarter off Aristida Briāna iela. Reinis Pļaviņš and Edgars Melnis opened the brewery and its taproom on 27 August 2013, and Riga City Council now lists the room as a kultūrkrogs, a culture pub of concerts, film nights and festivals. Sixteen taps pour the newest and the oldest of the house. Order whichever herbal ale is freshest; the meadowsweet and yarrow brews are house signatures, named for spirits your grandmother feared. The taproom argues that beer predates the law, and the paperwork behaves: the tax office rates the company A. Courtyard tables in August, and the beer never leaves home better than here.

Skyline Bar
Twenty six floors over the spires and the winding Daugava, in the tower Intourist began in 1967, finished in 1976 and only dared open in 1979 as Hotel Latvija. The glass lift alone is worth the ride, and the bar walls are glass to the floor. Order one balsam and blackcurrant at the glass, the city's own nightcap, whatever the printed list is promoting that season. Weekdays it opens at three, weekends at noon, and Thursday to Saturday evenings carry a small door fee. After nine on Friday and Saturday the room is adults only. The Soviet tower's best revenge, and the road's last stop: writ executed, elevator to bed.
