Every founding year on this road is older than the room it is printed in. Munich burned in 1945 and rebuilt itself carefully enough that you cannot tell, so the Bavarian register is the only honest witness: it dates each house, and then adds the line about what was reconstructed. Four of these five carry that line. Start early, because the first stop shuts on Sundays and the last one shuts on Saturdays.

Augustiner Stammhaus
Nobody has brewed here since 1884, when the Wagner family moved the kettles out to Landsberger Straße and left the old main house trading as a Wirtshaus. The 1328 on the label is the brewery's own claim and it is not secure: the first hard evidence of Augustinian brewing in Munich is 1411. What is certain is the room, because the Bavarian register lists Emanuel von Seidl's 1896 double house and protects the fittings inside it, with none of the rebuild clauses its bombed neighbours carry. Order in the Bierhalle and not the restaurant, because that is the only side of the house pouring a full litre, and the litre is Vollbier, the pale one, not the Edelstoff every guidebook promises. Take a fresh Brezn with it. And no part of this house pours from a wooden barrel, whatever you have read: that line exists only on automated content farms.

Weisses Bräuhaus im Tal
We had this under the wrong name. It traded as Schneider Bräuhaus from 2015 and then quietly went back to being the Weisses Bräuhaus im Tal: their own site still said Schneider on 12 July 2023 and said Weisses by 11 January 2024, and the old domain now redirects. Same tenant company, same tap, older name. The building is not the one Georg Schneider bought in 1872 either, because Heilmann und Littmann put this corner up in 1902 and the register records the gables as reconstruction after 1945. Eat the Kronfleisch, the diaphragm cut they butcher in house and which you will struggle to find anywhere else in the city, and drink an Original Schneider Weisse against it. The white sausages go out from nine until noon and not a minute later, which is a custom rather than a law, however firmly this room enforces it.

Hofbräuhaus
The 1589 is the brewery, not the building and not the room. The Bavarian register dates what stands to Littmann, Goebel and Maxon in 1896, rebuilt in 1949 and altered again in the sixties. Of the house you walk into, only the ground floor Schwemme came through the bombing. The Festsaal upstairs, where the Communist Räterepublik was proclaimed on 13 April 1919 and where the NSDAP was founded in front of some two thousand people on 24 February 1920, is reconstruction, finished for Munich's eight hundredth anniversary in 1958. The state owns it and the Sperger family have been the innkeepers since 1980. Yes, everyone comes, and the menu is printed in Italian for a reason. Sit with strangers in the Schwemme, order the whole roast Schweinshaxe with its dark beer gravy and dumpling, and take a Maß of Hofbräu Original to argue with it.

Alter Simpl
Kathi Kobus moved her crowd in here on Walpurgisnacht 1903 and lifted the name and the snarling bulldog off the satirical weekly Simplicissimus without asking the publisher. Two corrections to what the house itself prints: the magazine started in April 1896, not 1886, and her own biographer dates the wine restaurant to 1902. A bomb hit on 13 July 1944, though the register is more careful than the histories and says only the rear wing was rebuilt, so the street front is 1894 fabric on an early nineteenth century core. It went dark at the end of December 2023 when the operator filed for insolvency and reopened in April 2024 under new hands, which makes this four generations of ghosts and a two year old business. Duke Ellington sat at the piano here in 1961 and there is still a piano. Order the Schinkennudeln, the ham and egg noodles their card calls the Simpl classic, with a Löwenbräu Hell off the tap, and note the kitchen only runs past midnight from Thursday to Saturday.

Schumann's
Charles Schumann opened his bar on Maximilianstraße in 1982 and moved it into the Odeonsplatz arcades in 2003. On the company record as read on 5 August 2026 he is still the named representative of the operating company, though power of attorney passed to two of his people on 1 April 2022 and nothing we found dates his day to day role since. The address is grander than the tenancy sounds: this is Leo von Klenze's Bazargebäude of 1825, rebuilt after heavy war damage by 1956. Their own line is that it is a restaurant until midnight and a bar after, so eat first, because the Bratkartoffeln are the one thing he claims nobody else makes properly. Then ask for a Swimming Pool, the blue and creamy one he put into print in his 1984 bar book, and watch what the room does with the request. The Gin Basil Smash everyone orders here is not his and never was: it came out of Hamburg in 2008.
