Three of these stand within two hundred metres of each other on Great Bridgewater Street, which is either lazy routing or the best short walk in England. Two carry listed interiors, one is a converted Victorian gentlemen's lavatory, and the last two are the rooms this city actually made its noise in.
Nancy Swanick, who had the Peveril of the Peak for more than fifty five years and lived above it, died on 28 July 2026. Most writing about that pub, including a piece published the day after she died, still has her behind the bar in the present tense. Her family say it stays with them. Time Out named it the best pub in the country the same week.

Peveril of the Peak
A green-tiled island of a building from about 1820, done over inside and out around 1900, and the listing covers the inside: tiled dado, an Art Nouveau glass screen, serving hatches, fixed seating, the bell pushes. CAMRA rates that interior at its top grade. Nancy Swanick took it on around 1971 and kept it for fifty five years, living upstairs; she died on 28 July 2026 and her family say it stays with them. The Temple
A Victorian gentlemen's public lavatory sunk under the traffic island, with a staircase down and about a dozen people's worth of room at the bottom. Nobody can tell us when it stopped being a lavatory or when it began being a bar. There is no founding date in any source we could reach, no website, and no company we could tie to it, so you get the room and no year. Continental beer, bottled and on draught, Cruzcampo on the sign, and a jukebox that is the other reason people go down the steps. Our pin here is the one thing on this road we cannot independently check.

The Briton's Protection
Our 1811 does not hold. The listing says it was known by this name in 1820, the pub's own site says 1806, and the bicentenary got kept in 2011, so that is three numbers and no agreement. The register is unusually good on the inside: a Lincrusta ceiling, glazed sash windows serving into the corridor, a dog-leg staircase with barley-sugar balusters, white glazed brick in the lavatories. One correction to what everyone prints: the famous whisky wall is largely gone, about thirty on the shelf at the last survey rather than three hundred. Drink the cask, the Old Peculier.

Band on the Wall
It was the George and Dragon, built about 1862, and there was a licence on this site as early as 1803. In 1937 the landlord put the stage high on the far wall so the band played over the drinkers' heads, and the nickname stuck. It only took the name formally in 1975, after a conversation between the new owner and a Manchester instrument dealer. The irony is on the record: the expansion that reopened in 2022 enlarged the room by taking out the wall it is named after. You do not need a ticket to drink, because the Copper Bar is a walk-in with its own free programme.

Night & Day Cafe
A chip shop until Jan Oldenburg opened it in 1991, and the room a great deal of this city's noise started in. In November 2021 the council served a noise abatement notice after a single resident who had moved in next door during lockdown complained. Ninety four thousand people signed the petition. It went to court, and in March 2024 a judge upheld the notice but rewrote it so the venue could keep trading under new limits on club nights. It survived. The kitchen does Neapolitan sourdough from two in the afternoon, so order the Big Mouth pizza and stay for whoever is on.
