Macau keeps its heritage in a law with gazette numbers and its map in a datum of its own, and both were made to answer this week: two of these five doors sit against classified property and one pin turned out to be a resort blob 48 metres from the actual shop. The mainland's deliberately offset map datum does not apply here, which is worth knowing before you trust any pin in this city.

Old Taipa Tavern
At the old crossroads of Taipa village, wedged against the Pak Tai temple, which carries its own statutory record as monument MT005 while the pub next door keeps the beer cold. The territory's map bureau lists it at 21 Rua dos Negociantes under the Portuguese name Taverna da Taipa, which is the room in one phrase: an Antipodean tavern in a Portuguese village grid. Inside it is craft taps, big screens and expats arguing about rugby; outside it is incense, racing pigeons and banyan shade. The kitchen runs burgers and pies deep into the night, and the doors open mid afternoon on weekdays, midday at weekends. Open the escrow with a cold craft beer from the taps, drunk within earshot of the temple drums. Every guide in town calls it OTT, and nobody has ever needed the long name twice.

Goa Nights
Indo Portuguese cocktails and the spice routes in a glass, from the crew who ran one of the first independent cocktail rooms in town from 2018. Note it has moved: the Taipa Village shophouse is closed and it reopened on 15 August 2024 in Broadway Macau, shops E-G020 and G021 on the resort food street, where the government map now lists it as Noites de Goa. Gagan Sethi still runs an open bar where guests are waved round to shake their own drink, which is the house party trick. The menus on the operator's site were reissued in July 2026, so the room is alive and cooking. Order a scratch built Goan cocktail with the pork sorpotel, the fiery Goan pork stew the kitchen is proudest of. The old address will get you nothing but a shuttered house.

Fat Siu Lau
The Laughing Buddha has served since 1903, a claim the family has carried through four generations, though the business began on Cheng Peng street nearby and settled at 64 Rua da Felicidade later, on a date nobody wrote down. The street itself is on Macau's classified heritage list as ensemble CM008 under Law 11/2013, red shutters and all, lanterns that once advertised other pleasures. The room today is run by the fourth generation, with a head chef, Wu Ping Chuan, who has worked the stoves for over fifty years. Sam Hui once ordered the curry crab and carried extra portions home to Hong Kong. Order the roast pigeon by the ancestral recipe, or the African chicken for the bold; both still head the family's own menu. The oldest verdict in town, and it still shows up for service at noon.

A Lorcha
The lorcha was a smuggler's compromise, a Portuguese hull under a Chinese junk rig, faster than either parent, and Adriano Neves built his 1989 dining room in its image by the A-Ma temple where Macau got its name. The temple across the road is monument MM020 on the heritage list, and the brass benchmark out front is the zero of the whole territory's height system, so you are drinking at sea level, officially. The menu has barely moved in three decades and neither has the kitchen crew, which is the point. Order the clams Bulhão Pato style, garlic, coriander and olive oil, with sangria by the jug, and add the feijoada if the day has been long. Closed Tuesdays, packed Sundays. Objection impossible with a full mouth.

Vida Rica Bar
Floor to ceiling glass over Nam Van lake, double height windows, marble and chrome, on the second floor of the Mandarin Oriental where the whole room is arranged to face the evening skyline. Three counters work in sequence, cocktails, champagne and coffee, and the bartenders' negronis are the house study: ask for the Winehouse Negroni, gin and merlot and Campari with rhubarb bitters. The snacks run to handmade pizzas and proper burgers, which is the hotel admitting what people actually want at ten o'clock. Doors open five in the afternoon on weekdays and three at weekends, and the room runs past midnight into the small hours. The rich life is one elevator from bed, and the escrow releases at midnight either way.
