A small capital that keeps excellent records and then lets its rooms round the numbers. An inn in its two hundred and fiftieth year, a wine bar whose date belongs to a farm a hundred kilometres away, a rooftop that was dark for a decade, and a squatted barracks where most of the bars are shut this month.

The house is careful in Slovene and loose in English. Its own Slovene page says the official story begins in 1776, which is not the same as saying it opened then, and the English version quietly drops the qualifier. It stopped being continuous in 1950, when it was closed to the public and used by the secret police for five years. The Zalaznik family lost it in 1945 and only got full control back on Christmas Eve 2007. This is its two hundred and fiftieth year and they are running that hard. Venison goulash, or the gibanica they were first licensed to make properly.

Daktari
Krekov trg 7, not the 3 we had printed. Matija Bulatović and Maša Stanovnik opened it in 2012, on a square laid out in the first half of the nineteenth century over a filled-in defensive ditch and a demolished city wall. It is a living room rather than a bar: books you can borrow, old magazines stacked on the floor, a piano in the corner, sofas, dogs welcome, a garden for each season. Coffee by day, beer by night, and the beer shelf is far better than the room lets on. Order a Human Fish, or an Orval for the room's real character.

Two different things had been fused in our data. The Kristančič family have farmed the estate at Ceglo in Goriška Brda since 1820, a hundred kilometres west of this door. The house itself is something else: several older houses merged in the seventeenth century, a facade of about 1780, joined to the town hall in 1891. The bar here opened in 1999 and Aleš Kristančič's daughter Ela has run it since 2023. Start with the Puro, a zero dosage Rebula you disgorge yourself under water, then the Lunar, eight months on its skins. Shut on Sundays.

Nebotičnik
Vladimir Šubic finished the tower in 1933 and it is a monument of national importance. The detail worth having sits in the statutory record itself: the café interior is by Bojan Stupica, the theatre director. But the room is not 1933. Catering up here died at the end of the nineties and the café only came back in 2010, after a three million euro restoration. Take the lift to the twelfth floor, and do not stop at the café in the ground floor arcade, which carries the same name and a different owner. No entry fee: a cocktail on the terrace at sunset is the whole ticket.

Jalla Jalla, Metelkova
Metelkova is a whole compound and sending you at it in August is a coin flip: Channel Zero, Menza pri koritu and Klub Gromka are all dark this month. Go to Jalla Jalla, which is open and charges nothing at the door. It is a timber hut the squatters put up in 2004, the only thing on the site they built themselves rather than inherited from Franz Joseph's army; the barracks around it went up between 1882 and 1895. They took the place on 10 September 1993, the day after the city began knocking it down. A bottle of Union costs next to nothing and Thursday at seven is the jam.
