A Victorian palace built for shipping money: mosaic, wrought iron, and gentlemen's toilets in marble that are Grade I listed and worth the look. Lennon called fame the price of not drinking here quietly.

Mathew Street's own, where the band drank before and after Cavern sets because the Cavern itself served no alcohol. The photograph on the wall was taken in the seat you are sitting in.

Rebuilt from the original bricks a few metres from the original cellar, and still a sweaty vaulted room with live music all day. Purists object. The music does not care.

Allan Williams opened it in 1958 and gave the band their first residency in the basement, where they painted the walls to pay the tab. Records upstairs, bands below, brief closed.
