Every expedition since the fifties has been argued, funded or abandoned in a Kathmandu bar. This debrief opens in Thamel where the trekkers write on the walls, crosses the valley to a Newar tavern that was pouring long before anybody arrived to climb anything, and ends at the fireside of the White Russian who invented Nepali tourism. Two flights up off a Thamel lane, in a low room where every beam and every inch of wall carries thirty years of expedition stickers, scrawled routes, dates and names. People write their intended line on the wall before they go, which is either superstition or a will. Order the hot honey rum, read the walls properly, and notice how many of the notes are addressed to somebody rather than about a mountain.

2 · The Detour Purple Haze Rock Bar
A hundred and sixty metres downhill and about forty decibels up. Nepali rock and metal played live by a house band at a volume the grid is not always able to sustain, which is part of the entertainment. The crowd is young, local and entirely uninterested in anyone's trekking permit, and after an hour of reading other people's summit plans upstairs at Sam's that is a useful correction. One beer, loud, then get in a cab.

3 · The Anchor Honacha
Across the river to Patan, and round the back of the Durbar Square into a low smoky room with benches, where the Newars have been eating and drinking since long before the word Thamel meant anything. This is buff choila, spiced grilled buffalo, with beaten rice, and aila, the Newari spirit distilled at home for festivals and funerals and ordinary Tuesdays. This is the anchor because it is the only room on this road that is not about mountaineering. It is what people here drink when nobody is climbing anything.

4 · The Wildcard Rum Doodle Bar & Restaurant
Open since 1979 and named after W. E. Bowman's comic novel about an expedition up a mountain of forty thousand and a half feet, run by men who are all catastrophically bad at their jobs, which every serious climber finds funnier than every non-climber does. Summiteers sign enormous cardboard yeti footprints and the footprints go on the walls, Hillary's among them, and anyone who has stood on Everest eats free here for life. Note it is no longer in Thamel: the 2015 earthquakes moved it out to Naxal.

5 · The Last Call Chimney Bar, Yak & Yeti
Boris Lissanevitch was a Ballets Russes dancer who ended up in Kathmandu, opened the country's first hotel for foreigners in 1954, and more or less single-handedly began Nepali tourism, which makes him responsible for every other stop on this road. The Chimney keeps his borscht recipe and the great copper hood he cooked under. Take one slow whisky beside the fire, think about how recent all of this is, and then take the lift, because the bed is upstairs.

🎁 What we left off, and where to go instead. Tom and Jerry's is eighty-eight metres from Sam's, has been pouring since 1978 for porters and guides and the clients who owe them everything, and has a pool table that has settled arguments no court would touch. Two doors on one Thamel lane is not a road, so take it as a second round rather than a chapter. And the real drinking in this city is not in any of these rooms: it is in the tiny unnamed bhattis in the alleys off Thahity Chowk, plastic stools on the pavement, chhyang and raksi poured from a jug for whoever sits down. We cannot send you to a specific door because they mostly do not have names or signs. Walk in there and pick one anyway.
