Havana forgives everything nightly: the heat, the shortages, the century. Clemency is served frozen, then neat, then with horns. Bring cash, patience and your best shirt.
Read this before you plan anything. Cuba's national grid collapsed on the night of 3 August 2026, the sixth total failure this year and the third inside ten days in July, and parts of the country are losing power for twenty to thirty hours at a stretch. Havana Vieja has gone dark and banged pots about it. Tourist-facing bars are where the state puts its scarce diesel, so they mostly stay lit, but any evening can go out. Arrivals for January to May were down 58.4 percent on last year and hotel occupancy ran at 12.9 percent, so expect quiet rooms rather than queues. Carry cash, expect to be quoted in dollars, and treat every price you have read online as wrong: most of it is still denominated in a currency abolished in 2021.

El FloriditaThe house dates itself to 1817, when this corner sold drink as La Piña de Plata beside a gate in the city wall, and no archive anyone can produce confirms the year. What is documented is the man: Constantino Ribalaigua Vert, a Catalan, came behind the bar in 1914, bought the place in 1918, and worked out how to serve a daiquiri frozen. Hemingway drank the double with no sugar and it still carries his name. The bronze of him at the end of the bar went up in 2003, so it is not a relic. Order the Papa Doble and stand. - 2 · The Detour
La Bodeguita del MedioIn 1942 Ángel Martínez bought a grocery here called La Complaciente and put his own name over it. It sold provisions and fried food and poured for regulars, and it did not become La Bodeguita del Medio until 26 April 1950, named for sitting in the middle of the block. So it is a shop from 1942 and a bar under this name from 1950, and the anniversary the house keeps is built out of both. The mojito line on the wall is signed Hemingway and a cocktail historian who took it to a handwriting expert thinks it is a forgery. - 3 · The Anchor
La GuaridaThe film came first. Fresa y Chocolate used this subdivided mansion on Concordia as Diego's apartment, took the Havana festival in 1993 and an Oscar nomination in 1994, the only one a Cuban film has ever had. Enrique Núñez and Odeysis opened twelve seats in their own home on 14 July 1996, under the first self-employment licences the state allowed. The room outlived the film. Up a ruined marble staircase for the ropa vieja, then the roof. Book ahead and ring rather than email, because the internet here is what it is. - 4 · The Last Call
Hotel Nacional Garden TerraceMcKim, Mead and White of New York drew the hotel and Purdy and Henderson put it up in fourteen months on National City Bank's money. It opened on 30 December 1930 and was made a national monument in 1988. On 20 December 1946 Luciano and Lansky convened the Havana Conference in it, with Costello, Anastasia, Genovese and Trafficante in the rooms, which is the scene the second Godfather borrowed. Take a cane chair and a daiquiri on the lawn above the Malecón. The date belongs to the hotel; nobody can tell us when the terrace became a bar.
🎁 The stop we have taken off this road. Fábrica de Arte Cubano, the oil factory turned art machine, announced an open-ended closure on 7 June 2026, saying it was obliged to pause and reorganise and would open only for occasional announced events. Two months later its own calendar returns no events, its fac.cu domain no longer resolves at all, and nothing has been announced. State media put the closure down to the American blockade; independent Cuban outlets note it follows months of friction with the cultural authorities after a row at the door in December. We are not going to adjudicate that. We are telling you it is dark.
