District VII was the ghetto, then it was left to fall down for fifty years, and then the city decided to drink in the wreckage rather than wait for anybody to fix it. That is the amnesty. This road starts on the Buda side in a coffee bar that has not changed since 1961, crosses the river, and works east into the ruins.
- 1 · The Cold Open
Bambi Eszpresszó
Opened on 1 May 1961, Labour Day, on the Buda side, and then simply never changed. Small metal tables, stools, a long banquette in red imitation leather, a ceramic panel of the city on the wall, all of it original because nobody was ever given permission to modernise it and eventually nobody wanted to. Some of the staff started here in the sixties and are still behind the counter. Have a coffee and a beer, in that order, and understand what the city looked like before the ruins were fashionable.

- 2 · The Detour
Csendes
Cross the river and walk into District V, where this one hides by the Károlyi garden. The name means quiet and it is, in the afternoon at least. It is a wrecked salon hung with mannequin limbs, broken instruments, dolls' heads and other things somebody rescued rather than bought, which is the actual origin of the ruin bar look before it became a look. Take a fröccs, which is wine and soda in proportions you specify, and sit among the taxidermy while it is still light.

- 3 · The Anchor
Fekete Kutya
The Black Dog, on Dob utca, and this is a kocsma rather than a ruin bar: standing room, a short list of honest taps, fröccs poured with civic seriousness by someone who has heard every joke. This is the anchor precisely because it is not the attraction. It is the room this quarter drank in before anyone thought to charge admission to a courtyard, and it is the room the same people still drink in now. Order at the bar, stand, and stay longer than you meant to.

- 4 · The Wildcard
Szimpla Kert
The first one, opened in 2002 in a condemned block that was going to be demolished, and the blueprint that has since been copied on four continents. A Trabant in the courtyard you can sit in, bicycles wired to the ceiling, six or seven rooms of salvage, and the whole thing still in the original building rather than a recreation of it, which matters. It is now extremely full of visitors and it is still the real thing. Go, accept the crowd, and look up.

- 5 · The Last Call
Kisüzem
Small Factory, on the corner of Kis Diófa, and it is where the quarter's own people go at the hour the tour groups are being counted back onto a bus outside Szimpla. Artists' canteen by temperament, kitchen open late, decent records, nobody performing anything. The last honest pour in District VII and the correct place to stop, because the bed is four minutes away and you are going to need it.

🎁 What we left off, and why. Gettó Gulyás stands seventy-six metres from Szimpla and it is a good kitchen doing gulyás and chicken paprikás with handmade nokedli, which is exactly what you want in this quarter at nine in the evening. It is not a separate chapter of a drinking road, it is dinner. Eat there between stops three and four and the whole night works better. Its name, incidentally, is not decoration: this quarter was the ghetto, sealed in November 1944, and District VII is drinking in buildings that remember it.
