Bucharest keeps its receipts badly and its rooms beautifully. A beer hall older than its own great hall, an inn where a war was ended on paper, a garden nobody has photographed since 2024, and a club that will tell you what it is doing in November.

Caru' cu Bere
The business is 1879 and it did not start here: Ion Căbășanu and his nephews were pouring on Calea Victoriei first. Nicolae Mircea bought this plot on 25 September 1897, aged twenty nine, and Siegfried Kofczinsky and Alois Pesch built him the neo-Gothic hall you are sitting in between 1898 and 1899. So the beer house is a good twenty years older than its own famous room. It is a listed monument and a beer hall first: drink one under the vaults. Ten in the morning until midnight, seven days, and it is as full of Bucharest as it is of visitors.

Grădina Verona
A walled garden off Strada Pictor Arthur Verona, opened in 2009, with about four hundred seats under the trees. It is not the Cărturești bookshop's garden, whatever everyone says including us: Cafeneaua Verona is its own business at number fifteen, next door to the shop at thirteen. Beer and lemonade in the heat, mulled wine and tea when it turns, so it is not a summer-only room. One honest warning: we could find no dated sign of life on it after July 2024. Hanul lui Manuc
Manuc Bei was an Armenian merchant out of Rusciuc who built this inn between 1806 and 1808 around a galleried timber courtyard you can still drink in. On 16 May 1812 the Treaty of Bucharest was signed inside it, ending six years of war between the Russians and the Ottomans. It spent decades as the Grand Hotel de la Dacie from the 1860s, was nationalised, went back to the founder's descendants in 2007 and has been restored four times over. Listed at national grade. Wine in the galleried courtyard. Careful restoration on an original plan, not untouched 1808.

Nomad Skybar
We used to call this a rooftop over the Old Court and it is not one. The Curtea Veche palace is a hundred metres off; this is the top floor of a building on Strada Smârdan looking over Old Town roofs in general. The glass roof slides back when the evening is warm, so it works in either season. Cocktails, and a wine list somebody was still editing a week ago, which is more than most rooftops can prove. It was trading by late 2015 at the latest and nobody will tell us who started it.

Control Club
Two rooms on Strada Constantin Mille, and the only stop on this road that will tell you what it is doing three months from now. Its own listings run from a Bogotá selector in August to Imarhan out of Algeria in November. It says it has been going more than sixteen years and will not put a founding year in writing, so we are not going to invent one for it. Nobody publishes what it pours either, so take whatever is on and go late. Come for the room and the bill rather than the drinks list, and come late.
